Boats : A Brief Overview by Greg Mitchell
Boats are something which we have been using since ancient times for a means of transport on water. Boats are used to carry many things including useful commodities as well as humans. Boats are basically a watercraft of a particular size and are specifically designed to float on water. It should be noted that the design of the boats is dependent on the type of the water body on which it is supposed to float and make a passage. If we see from naval point of view, a small floating transporting body which is carried in a large one (usually ship) is called a boat. It is also interesting to note that submarines are also a typical type of boats. Some of the other popular types of boats are Great lakes freighter, riverboat, narrowboat as well as ferryboat.
We all must be aware of the working principle of boats. They work entirely on the Archimedes principle of buoyancy of water. In common terms Archimedes principle states that the higher the volume of the ship, the more weight it can carry as the more water it displaces. So boats are specifically designed keeping an account of the wrights they need to carry and this is the reason that even ships being several tons in weight, float very easily on water surface.
If we go for categorizing the types of boats found, we will end up with three types of them:
* Manual powered: This is cheapest form of boats and is still in use by rural and in many urban areas too. Boats in this category include rafts, canoed, kayaks, punt etc, which are just powered and directed by humans with the help of poles or bamboo sticks. This is also one of the most ancient and primitive form of boats ever made by the human race and the design is also quite simple.
* Wind powered: With the evolvement of mankind, people started to know the power of wind. These types of craft have sails or mast which obstructs the flow of wind and this obstructed wind help in moving the boat in the forward direction of wind. However, this category has the strong disadvantage that they can float in only one direction, which is the direction of the flow of wind. It is rather impossible to make it move in opposite direction of wind, just with the help of sails.
* Motor powered: With the evolution of engines and other mechanical parts, motor boats came up and is still the most used form of boat nowadays. All ships, submarines and other ferries use this motor powered engines in it. You can turn your boat in any direction is also faster compared to above mentioned two categories.
In other words boats are the only means of water transport we have at this present times. With the rapid change in fluid engineering and technology, there may be more advanced boats coming up very soon in near future which will run faster than the contemporary ones.
