How Boat Design Software Can Transform Your Sailing
If you’ve ever attempted to design anything, and I mean anything, not something as complicated as a yacht, then you’ll be aware just how difficult it can be. Maybe that’s the reason some mariners, or yachtsmen, are deterred by the idea of drawing up plans for their own boat. But they shouldn’t be. Modern day 3-D CAD design programs are so slick and easy to grasp that what may well have been difficult years ago is now really quite straightforward.
But just because it’s easy it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t require any input on your part. You need to learn how to implement all the functions that the program has to offer before you venture out on your own into deep water, so to speak. That’s why some boat hull design programs are supplied with a set of sample files that you can play around with and discover how to manipulate and try out.
When CAD programs were first introduced they had an enormous learning curve connected with them. They sometimes came with a collection of handbooks six inches thick and you might also have been invited on a training course. Things are somewhat different today. All computer software, not just 3-D design software, is significantly more intuitive and help is usually available at the click of a mouse. To get the best out of your software you need to work with it and comprehend what the software is doing when you tell it to do certain things. For example some packages now contain sub programmes to work out the effects of what you’re doing upon draft, speed and displacement on-the-fly. Meaning that as you manipulate the lines of your hull, the software will continually constantly update these parameters so you can see what effect your alterations are producing. This instant feedback mechanism makes it possible for you to develop an eye for what works and what doesn’t. Getting prompt feedback like this can be very helpful. To see why, you only need to think back to the days of color film photography. If you took a poor photo, you didn’t know about it until the prints came back from the processor. By then, you’d forgotten what settings you used and so couldn’t correct it next time. With modern day digital cameras, instant feedback enables us to take corrective action for poor shots right away.
The key to getting the most from your boat design software is to become fully familiar with it. The temptation with any new software is to jump in and get started right away. But it really does make sense to really get to know the program before you start your first prject. Take your time. Play around with all that it has to offer and you will find much more that is possible than seems apparent at first.
Three-dimensional design can become somewhat confusing and so it’s very useful that these programs have the ability to rotate your boat hull in all three dimensions as you design it. In that way you are able to see the effects your adjustments are producing from an aesthetic point of view rather than from a hydrological one. Just fiddling with your design for an hour or so can help you develop the skills you need and get the maximum from your 3-D design program.
You might expect that all these specialised facilities would add to the cost of the program but nowadays complicated programs can be developed in a variety of ways that reduce expense to the end user. So this type of software is nowhere near as pricey as you might expect. To get the most from it not only do you want to practice and teach yourself as indicated above but you can even put the program to work and develop designs which you can easily sell to others. Now that’s what I definitely call getting the most from your software.
