STRATEGIES FOR TEAM-BUILDING

Teambuilding – is it scientific or is it just a ‘nice-to-have’.

While activities and interventions generally cover issues such as inter-personal skills and relationships, boosting self-awareness, attitudes and solidarity – it isn’t easy to calculate the return on investment.  Is it possible to put a monetary value on emotional elements such as staff commitment, loyalty or morale?

On the flip side, there are tangible elements such as productivity and outputs – and these can be measured and valued.

However, it’s not always about measuring results.  Organisations that want to get ahead and stay ahead have long recognized the necessity of ongoing teambuilding. The secret is thorough planning and strategic insight into the reasons why a team-building activity is required, what the desired result is and ensuring that the activity meets these objectives.

And when it comes to activities – there is a vast range from peaceful options that provide people with opportunities to relax and recharge in a subdued environment (such as yacht cruises) to challenging, adrenalin-fuelled activities that push the team beyond their comfort zones (such as skydiving gifts or white water rafting).

Have a look at the following points before making any decisions as it may just help in directing the choice of activity  :

·         Is there a lack of communication between staff members?

·         Have there been major changes in the department or the company such as employees leaving or joining?

·         Has there been change resulting from an acquisition/merger, downsizing or rapid expansion?

·         Do new employees need to be assimilated into the organisation or the department?

·         A need to provide opportunities for all employees to develop their skills and to participate (sometimes teams are dominated by A-type personalities and the more reserved – but no less able – people are not given a chance to shine)

·         Is there a need to lift staff morale

Any team building activity should address the critical success areas of the organisation, so it’s worthwhile making a carefully considered choice.   It is also worth discussing your strategic requirements with organisations that specialize in teambuilding solutions.   They will have practical suggestions for the most effective ways of engaging with the team, how to motivate them and how to inspire them.  They should also be able to advise on what the most cost-effective and practical solution is.

One of the most popular – and effective – teambuilding interventions is ‘experiential’ training which links learning to personal experience.  A company in Australia that specializes in unique gifts in Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and other major cities, says more and more companies are choosing experiences such as skydiving, cooking classes, horse riding, mountain biking, white water rafting for team building purposes.

When it comes to teambuilding, of course, there’s no guarantee that the chosen activity will find approval with every single individual participant.   Teams are often made up of very different personalities, so it’s no guarantee that the selected activity will meet the approval of everyone .  To ensure that as many of the strategic objectives are met and that the activity meets widespread approval – it’s wise to discuss ideas and needs with an events or top gifts company and get their professional advice.

So, is it art or is it science?  The answer is probably somewhere in between – but there is little doubt that the right incentive will bring out the best in everyone.
